Building Something That Actually Belongs to Me

It feels like a lot has happened in a very short amount of time.

A few months ago, I was mostly focused on making music. Writing things I needed to get out of my head, experimenting with different sounds, figuring out exactly what Black Rose Dreamer was supposed to become, and slowly putting everything out into the world.

Now it feels bigger than that.

Black Rose Dreamer and Black Rose Records are officially registered businesses in Ontario. I have my own website, my own catalogue, multiple releases behind me, more music being worked on, and an actual foundation underneath everything instead of just a collection of songs scattered across the internet.

That matters to me.

I have never wanted this project to feel manufactured. I don't want to pretend there is some massive team behind everything carefully constructing an "artist brand." Most of this is still me sitting there obsessing over tiny details that probably nobody else will ever notice.

A vocal that feels too flat.

A mix that doesn't hit hard enough.

Artwork that doesn't feel right.

A line that technically works but doesn't say exactly what I want it to say.

A tiny detail being slightly out of place and bothering me more than it reasonably should.

Apparently this is what I have chosen to do with my sanity.

But I also think that attention to detail is part of what makes this mine.

Lately, I have been going back through some of my older material and rebuilding parts of it using everything I have learned since releasing it. Some songs are being cleaned up. Some are being reconstructed from the original stems. Vocals are being balanced better, mixes are getting more depth and clarity, and I'm working toward making my music sound higher quality while preserving the human imperfections that make it beautiful.

I'm not interested in pretending everything I released before was flawless.

It wasn't.

I was learning.

I'm still learning.

The difference is that now I have a much clearer understanding of what I want Black Rose Dreamer to sound like, look like, and represent.

The music has always lived somewhere between vulnerability and aggression for me. Some songs are deeply personal and exposed, while others come from anger, frustration, resentment, or parts of myself that I normally keep buried.

Sometimes all of those things end up in the same song.

That contrast has become a huge part of what Black Rose Dreamer is.

I also want the visual side of everything to keep evolving.

I've become increasingly aware of how quickly artwork can lose its impact when it looks overly polished, artificial, or like something people have already seen a thousand times. I still love detailed and ambitious artwork, but I want the finished result to feel intentional, original, and connected to the music.

The artwork should feel like it belongs to the song.

There is still an absurd amount I want to build.

More releases.

Better masters.

More videos.

More writing.

More experiments with genres, production styles, and ideas that may turn into some of my best songs or end up abandoned on a hard drive somewhere.

Black Rose Records is also something I want to continue developing beyond simply being the name attached to my releases.

Registering it as an actual business made everything feel considerably more real. It isn't somebody else's label attached to my work. It's something I own and am building myself.

That independence comes with a lot more responsibility and considerably more work, but I would rather have control over the direction of my music and the decisions surrounding it.

One of the strangest parts of all of this has been realizing that people are actually paying attention while I build it.

The audience around Black Rose Dreamer has grown much faster than I expected when I officially started publishing my music. Every stream, follow, message, comment, share, and person who finds their way onto this website represents somebody choosing to spend their time with something I created.

I genuinely appreciate that.

I'm still going to make weird shit.

I'm still going to write things that are uncomfortable.

I'm still going to jump between genres when a song calls for it.

I'm still going to obsess over details until they feel right.

And I'm probably never going to reach a point where I think I have everything completely figured out.

I don't think I want to.

Part of what makes this exciting is being able to look back a few months later and realize how much better I've gotten, how much the sound has developed, and how much bigger the original idea has become.

This isn't something I'm presenting after everything has already been perfected.

You're watching me build it while it's happening.

Song by song.

Release by release.

And I still feel like I'm only beginning to understand what Black Rose Dreamer can eventually become.

Thank you for being here while I figure that out.

About The Black Rose Dreamer (Contact Form included)

Black Rose Dreamer is where I turn the parts of my life I couldn’t bury into something that finally has a voice.

My music often comes from heartbreak, betrayal, grief, rage, obsession, survival, and the ugly little truths people usually try to hide. Some songs are soft enough to bleed quietly. Some are angry enough to bite back. Either way, everything I make comes from somewhere real.

I tend to move between alt-rock, pop-punk, gothic pop, acoustic confessionals, cinematic darkness, and whatever else the wound demands. I’m not here to make perfect little songs about perfect little feelings. I’m here to take the wreckage, drag it into the light, and make it sing.

My name is Jesse James Smith. Resident and registered sole proprietor in Ontario, Canada, and I am the 𝕭𝖑𝖆𝖈𝖐 𝕽𝖔𝖘𝖊 𝕯𝖗𝖊𝖆𝖒𝖊𝖗🖤🥀

Karma’s Got Your Number is about keeping a promise for someone who still erased you like you were never there.

I didn’t need revenge.

I just needed a chorus. 🖤

Lyrics: I heard you're doing better with a caption and a pose New smile, new ring, new life, same shit nobody knows You cleaned up the ending till it looked good online But I was still there in the middle of the lie He picked apart your body, then he walked out anyway So you made yourself smaller and came back to my place I used to want the truth out, used to explain Now I just sit back while karma learns your name You called it a glow-up, called it healing, called it fate But you still needed me when he threw you away

I don't have to lift a finger I don't have to say a word You did it to yourself And I hope it fucking hurts You begged me not to tell him So I kept my mouth shut Then you acted like I'm nothing Baby, good fucking luck

Karma's got your number I hope you hear it ring I hope it says my name When it ruins everything Three months to a ring Less than a year to a vow Built a whole new life And you still cut me out I kept your dirty secret I kept it like I said You erased me anyway So let karma do the rest Karma's got your number And she's calling you tonight

You thought you could leave and make it look clean You thought you could direct the whole fucking scene But you forgot I was there, you forgot what I knew You forgot every lie could walk back to you He broke you down first, then you came back to me Asking if I wanted you to stay and fall asleep We said it was nothing, just a body in a bed Funny how the nothing still got left unsaid

That's cute

I love the way you panic when the timeline slips I love the way you choke on your own little script He counted every inch of you then left you with the bill You starved the old reflection but the hunger followed still Three months to a ring, less than a year to a vow A baby in the picture and you still cut me out No white in the photos, just a smile trying to pass Like I don't know the truth about the months before that

Come on

I don't have to lift a finger I don't have to say a word You did it to yourself And I hope it fucking hurts You begged me not to tell him So I kept my mouth shut Then you acted like I'm nothing Baby, good fucking luck

Karma's got your number I hope you hear it ring I hope it says my name When it ruins everything Three months to a ring Less than a year to a vow Built a whole new life And you still cut me out I kept your dirty secret I kept it like I said You erased me anyway So let karma do the rest Karma's got your number And she's calling you tonight

You made your bed, now lay in it You made your mess, now stay with it You said we'd stay friends when the next love came around Then you disappeared the second he locked you down I'm detached, I'm clean, I am finally free The best revenge is you remembering me You kept the spotlight, I kept the receipts You kept the new name, I kept my peace I never told him what you begged me not to say But every lie he brought me got corrected anyway You wanted me quiet while you dressed it up as fate But karma reads timestamps and she never shows up late

Good luck

Karma's got your number I hope you hear it ring I hope it says my name When it ruins everything Three months to a ring Less than a year to a vow Built a whole new life And you still cut me out I kept your dirty secret I kept it like I said You erased me anyway So let karma do the rest Karma's got your number And she's calling you tonight

Good luck with all of that
